Trollfest
Trollfest
Banjo, accordion, mandolin, trumpet, wooden ladle, washboard, egg, triangle, bell, jew's harp, tambourine, piano,sawblade.....These are just 14 of the ingredients used to create this extreme trollish soup.
In total 30+ "instruments" make their appearance and they are all being played by the four TrollfesT members.
TrollfesT from Norway is out with their debut album, "Willkommen Folk Tell Drekka Fest!!", and beware: this is party metal from start till finish. "Willkommen Folk Tell Drekka Fest" means something like "Welcome People To Drinking Party" and all songtitles/lyrics are a strange mix of drunken Norwegian and German. Trollfest is being described as a drunken version of Finnish folk metal band Finntroll and there's no dobut that TrollfesT is being heavily influenced by them; yet I find TrollfesT to have their sound and they are definitely not clones.
The intro track entitled "Trollfest" is actually really good - one of the highlights; it starts with really melodic acoustic guitars and mandolin. Then Jew's harp kicks in and those three instruments follow each others until second tracks starts with its aggressive folk metal guitars.
My main gripe with this album is the length; 36 minutes and 30 seconds are way too short in my opinion and the album is too uneven. There are some killer tracks like "Helvetes Hunden Garm" and "Sagaen Om Suttungs-Mjød", but there are also fillers like "Offer Visa" and "Der Tag Nach-Hinter".
I applaude TrollfesT for just letting it loose on this record. They obviously had very fun making these songs and this is a welcome break from all the serious albums out there. TrollfesT just want to have fun and drink a lot and make Norwegian/Scandinavian inspired folk metal songs! "Willkommen Folk Tell Drekka Fest" is a very fun and catchy album, but don't take it too seriously. You may get disappointed, albums like this is perfect in a party situation.
On a last note; If you enjoy folk metal bands like Finntroll, Ensiferum, Turisas I can guarentee that you'll end up loving many songs on this TrollfesT CD.
