Magma is a French progressive rock band founded in 1969 by classically-trained drummer Christian Vander, who claimed as his inspiration a "vision of humanity's spiritual and ecological future" that profoundly disturbed him. In the course of their first album, the band tells the story of a group of people fleeing a doomed Earth to settle on the planet Kobaia. Later, conflict arises when the Kobaians — descendants of the original colonists — encounter other Earth refugees. A remarkable aspect of Magma's albums is that Vander actually invented a constructed language, Kobaian, in which most lyrics are sung. Later albums told different stories set in more ancient times; however the Kobaian language remained an integral part of the music.
Considered by many to be musically adventurous and imaginative, Magma makes extensive use of the choral format, their album Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh being particularly reminiscent of the classical composer Carl Orff, while Wurdah Itah reveals connections to Bela Bartok's piano music and "Les Noces" by the Russian master Igor Stravinsky. Work by Magma is also highly influenced by jazz saxophone player John Coltrane.
So many musicians played with Magma over the years, who then went on to form their own solo projects and/or spinoff acts, that the Kobaian term Zeuhl came to refer to the style of these bands and the French jazz fusion/symphonic rock scene that grew around them. Beyond Christian Vander, the drummer/composer, the most well-known of the original Magma lineup was probably Jannick Top, the bassist/co-composer (who has gone on to produce albums for Celine Dion).
While original Magma vinyl fetches top dollar, Christian Vander and Jannick Top together keep Magma's back catalog in print on CD.
Note that there was also a short-lived Polish pop band in the early 1980s called Magma, who recorded only one album and some singles.

Magma is zogehete "Zeuhl" prog.
hier een klein stukje:
MAGMA biography
Led by classically-trained drummer Christian VANDER, MAGMA helped to create a whole genre of music (nicknamed "Zheul" after the unique MAGMA language). Their music combined elements of jazz, opera, minimalism and 20th century classical music, yet emotionally rich and undeniably powerful sound that eventually brought on the ZHEUL sub-genre of progressive rock. Incredible and intense! This band was as a real source for many French musicians. Some players were more influential than others, but with each change in personnel came a slight change in the sound of the band.
MAGMA is one of the most influential European bands since the early 70's and has recorded not a good record but several FANTASTIC albums. They are a concept band whose albums explain the origins and development of the new civilization on Kobaia, and their interactions with the people of EARTH and other planets. For beginners, I'd say start with "Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh" (MDK for short) (1973), the magnificent "K...

MDK features all the hallmarks for which MAGMA are recognized. "Udu Wudu" (1977) is more for the MAGMA fans while the first albums are more jazzy. "Attahk" (1978) is another one of the band's more accessible albums, more song orientated with more pronounced jazz and rock influences. After that, the albums from "Attahk" on are something of a step down. Overall MAGMA produced some of the most important and groundbreaking music of the decade.
in dat geval zou ik het eens kunnen checkenChucknorris schreef:[..]
