Iced Earth

Metalreviews.comDisclaimer - I conducted this interview on a cell phone, so had no way of recording his exact responses. Most of this interview is from what I wrote as notes during the interview, the other part is pulled from memory. Some of the information in this may be wrong, but it is all like I recollect it. If any changes should be made, please email me and I will be happy to change anything if the changes are needed.
What kind of reactions is the new Demons and Wizards album getting in the press, since it hasn't been released yet to the general public?
Pretty good, like you said, it hasn't been released yet to the public, so I can't really say how it has been doing overall, as the fan's opinions are the ones that truly matter to me.
Is there any material perhaps left over from the album that could see light on a new album from Demons and Wizards, Iced Earth, or Blind Guardian?
No, we used everything we wrote towards this album. When there is a new Demons and Wizards album, it will be entirely new music, nothing left over.
Are there any plans to tour for the new album?
Not right now, Blind Guardian just went into pre production this past week, and I am about to start writing the new Iced Earth album, so there is simply no time to put together a tour. We would love to tour, but there is no time at this point. Now if the album sells like crazy, much more than the first one, then we would do everything we could to put a tour together to promote it, we would be stupid not to.
What is your favorite Demons and Wizards song?
Probably Fiddler on the Green, to me, it has so much magic in it. I don't really have a favorite from Touched By the Crimson King, There are a number of songs on that album that I would consider very good, but I can't call one of them my favorite. Terror Train is a really good, just fast paced ripping track, I like to listen to it when I am really pissed about something. Crimson King is really good too, I like to listen to it when I am sort of feeling down and depressed, as it is a really emotional song to me.
What are your expectations for the new album?
I don't really have any. I think it may sell 50k - 100k more than the first one, but other than that, I don't really have any.
A few songs on Touched by the Crimson King were inspired by The Dark Tower saga, how did Hansi and yourself come about writing songs based on that?
I myself have never read the series, but Hansi had just finished it when we were in pre production, and he approached me about doing a few songs based on the story, because he thought it would be a really good basis to write some songs on. So I had him explain it to me and I agreed. So as usual, I wrote the guitar parts and he fit lyrics into them, and they turned out to be great songs. The three songs that are based on the series are, Crimson King, Terror Train, and The Gunslinger.
What have been the initial reactions to the newly released Gettysburg DVD?
Well, a lot of people like it, and a lot of people don't. I think the ones who don't like it bought it thinking it would be something different than it was, but we never tried to cover up the fact that it was more of a documentary on the battle with the video to the trilogy and some different stereo mixes for the fans that may have surround sound. Out of the ones who liked it, I think they really have an appreciation for history and for that battle, so they can appreciate it for what it is. As for the ones who don't like it, not everyone will like this because it isn't your traditional band DVD, it is something far different, and to my knowledge, it has never been done before on a band DVD. This DVD isn't for everyone, as there will be some people who don't enjoy it.
How is Tim's and your chemistry as musicians with each other?
Oh, it is great, I think we have a very long road ahead for us, and I hope we will be working together for a very long time. This is just the beginning of what Iced Earth will become with him singing. He and I are great friends as well; we just both had daughters a month apart, so he and I just got together in Ohio for a week and just hung out. I had a blast over there. I think he is a great singer, and as soon as they selected him to sing for Priest, I told myself that I wanted to work with him someday, and low and behold, it happened and it has been a dream come true.
Will he have any part in writing the new album?
I would like for him to, but he isn't really a song writer, he is a singer. He doesn't really have any experience as a song writer, but I do want to give him a chance. We will see how it goes; he has a lot of growing to do as a song writer. I think he did a great job on Red Baron/Blue Max, so we will see how it goes with the new albums writing process. He has never really had a chance to write songs in the past for his albums that he was on, but I hope to maybe help change that and give him a chance.
What, if anything, are you doing about trying to fill Ralph and James places?
Nothing right now, it isn't really the time right now and I am not too worried about it. I have been getting videos, cds, pictures, and mp3s daily from people who would like to have the positions, but I have not acted on it yet. There are a few prospective people I am looking at, but I have not made any decisions yet, and don't intend to for a while.
You kind of touched on it earlier, but you said the new Iced Earth album is about to start being written. What is it going to be about, any ideas?
Yes, absolutely. It is going to be the continuation of the Something Wicked trilogy. I hope to devote two full albums to it. I am hoping for about three or three and a half hours of music. It is going to be very intricate, and probably technically the hardest thing I have ever written. It is going to have everything in it that it would need to have to give the feel from the regions where the story was based. I hope to have it fully orchestrated and maybe include some sitars and other instruments from the region. I have let Jim Morris read part of what I have written about it, because the story itself has been written since Something Wicked came out. He is a really big science fiction fan, and he said that he is so looking forward to the albums being written, because it is one of the best science fiction stories he has ever read.
I really would like to thank Jon and Tara at SPV Records for letting me have this opportunity. I would also like to thank Alex here on the team for passing the opportunity on to me to interview one of my heroes.

The Glorious Burden van Iced Earth zou ik eerder The Unglorious Downfall noemen.

Former JUDAS PRIEST and current ICED EARTH/BEYOND FEAR frontman Tim "Ripper" Owens has defended himself against accusations that he is not a "songwriter" following comments made by ICED EARTH mainman Jon Schaffer in a recent interview.
Speaking to LocalMetal.com, Schaffer spoke about his decision to record a concept album based on the "Something Wicked This Way Comes" story first touched up on the 1998 album of the same name. Asked how much input Owens will have in the songwriting process for the new album, Schaffer said, "Probably not that much, because the story has been there for awhile. Tim doesn't have experience as a songwriter. He's never really been given that opportunity. However, he WILL be given that opportunity in ICED EARTH. It's just that with this, it's kind of a done deal, and he's very aware of that. Also, just because somebody is a great singer doesn't necessarily mean they're a great songwriter, and you can basically ruin your career very quick if you're not careful about the way the writing goes, and Tim is aware of that also. He's doing a side project right now in which he has… It's him and another guitarist, it's a friend of his that's writing most of the material, but Tim is writing and he's gaining experience by doing that, which is a good thing. So we'll see… I mean, obviously, if Tim comes up wit hideas and they're really strong ideas, they'll get used and he'll get credit for it, and he knows that. But he also knows the importance of the decisions in songwriting, and if you're not careful, you can ruin your entire career. We have to be careful… It's funny to me. It blows me away how the human mind works and how people think that just because a guy plays an instrument he must be a songwriter, and that's so far from the truth, it's unbelievable. In all my years of being a professional musician, I've probably met two or three guys that are actual, real songwriters, and there's quite a difference."
Responding to fan comments made on his official message board in regards to the above interview, Owens wrote, "Saying I'm not a songwriter is WRONG. You don't say anything unless you know what you are talking about. Take BRAINICIDE; if you haven't heard it, then you can't say anything. Take WINTERS BANE; if you haven't heard it, then you can't say anything. Take BEYOND FEAR; if you haven't heard it, then you can't say anything. Also, I have written on every song on the BEYOND FEAR CD and I have written seven of the songs myself. So to say that somebody is doing all or most of the writing is wrong, John Comprix [BEYOND FEAR guitarist] has written with me and still has put in 50 percent of the writing not all of it, And his stuff is just amazing. It makes me very angry that people say I can't write, when they don't know that anything about my past and then just bring up PRIEST. To me, Glenn [Tipton] was probably one of the best songwriters I've dealt with, and If you agree or not, I don't care...See, I can put my foot in my mouth also! As for the next ICED EARTH CD, Jon and I knew that it was going to be the 'Something Wicked' thing, and there really isn't anything I can do on it but add some input and sing. This is a story in Jon's head, and me not being into science fiction stuff at all, I really won't be that much help. But it will be a killer CD, and I really look forward to making it."
Owens is in the process of signing a record deal for his BEYOND FEAR project, which also features guitarists John Comprix (SPAWN, 13 FACES) and Dwane Bihary (MISSING SKIN), bassist Dennis Hayes (WINTERS BANE, SEVEN WITCHES) and drummer Eric Elkins (CRYPTKICKER, ALL YOU FEAR). Songtitles set to appear on the CD include "I Don't Need This", "And You Will Die", "It Is Me", "Telling Lies", "The Faith", "The Human Race", "Your Time Has Come" and "My Last Words". Producing the group's debut CD will be Jim Morris (ICED EARTH, DEATH), with most of the recording sessions scheduled to take place in Owens' home state of Ohio.
