Isis - Panopticon

hahaha ik sta er om bekend snel op mijn mening terug te komen (misschien toch maar D66 stemmen?). En hoe pijnlijk od genant dan ook; hier wederom. Ik had van te voren wel kunnen nagaan dat een Isis plaat niet na 2x luisteren in je hoofd blijft zitten. Ik heb In the Absence of truth in de afgelopen 2 (!) dagen zeker 10 keer van voor tot einde geluisterd. En de muziek gaat in eerste instantie het ene oor in en andere oor uit; maar gaat op den duur onder je huid zitten. Nogsteeds doodzone van de vlakke productie tijdens de harde stukken maar dat doet me momenteel niks.

Ik heb Panopticon al in de kast staan sinds ie net uit kwam. En ik vind die plaat nog steeds geweldig. Nu zie ik ineens, tot mijn verbazing, dat ze intussen al weer 2 albums uit hebben gebracht. (Ik hield de band niet echt in de gaten)

In the Absence of Truth uit 2006 en Wavering Radiant die dit jaar moet verschijnen.

Kan iemand mij vertellen of het nog meerwaarde heeft om die 2 albums te checken? Of kan ik het beter gewoon bij Panopticon laten?

Absence of Truth is wel aardig, maar voegt naar mijn inzien weinig toe aan Panopticon en Oceanic (die mijn voorkeur heeft boven Panopticon trouwens). Die nieuwe heb ik pas twee keer half gehoord dus kan daar verder nog geen gefundeerde mening over geven.

Ik weet niet hoeveel jij van die muziek houdt maar als fan is het aanrader.

In the Absence of Truth doet mij helemaal niets. Die vind ik echt doodsaai. Ook na diverse draaibeurten. Maar Wavering Radiant bevalt me prima. Je komt er makkelijker in zeg maar (nou kom maar op met de flauwe opmerkingen ). Het klinkt allemaal wat compacter, meer geinspireerd en het sfeertje bevalt me goed. Denk dat ik hem op vinyl ga aanschaffen.

Ik vind Celestial en Oceanic het gaafst. Ook de oude EP's zoals The Red Sea & This Is Mosquito Control zijn erg tof.

Ik zag ze voor het eerst live in Vera Groningen tijdens de Oceanic tour en dat was echt overdonderend.

Ik vind de nieuwe werken van Isis maar niks eerlijk gezegd.

De nieuwe Isis is leuk en bij vlagen prachtig. De nadruk ligt nogmeer op het creëren van atmosfeer en het hardere rifwerk valt me behoorlijk tegen. Maar het elektronische sausje en stukken die me zelfs doen denken aan A Perfect Circle en Mastodon voegen weldegelijk wat toe. Maar de ruigheid van de eerdere platen is nu helemaal weg.

Dat vind ik dus juist jammer.

Dat Wavering Radiant minder hard is dan het oudere werk klopt wel ja. Ik moet zeggen dat ik het niet erg vind, (Ik hou wel van die atmosferische aanpak) maar kan me wel voorstellen dat zwaardere liefhebbers er een beetje op afknappen.

Overigens heb ik wel het idee dat de hardere stukken als ze er zijn, er wel beter uitkomen omdat de rustigere stukken nu nog rustiger zijn. De contrasten lijken wat groter in mijn beleving, maar goed, wellicht hoor ik dat alleen.

Dat nummer van het nieuwe album wat op hun Myspace staat komt op mij harder over dan het werk op Panopticon. Of ligt dat nou aan mij?

Ligt niet aan jouw, dat klopt gewoon! Maar de plaat is algemeen gezien gewoon wat meer ambient gericht. Als je de plaat in één keer doorluisterd valt het echt op dat er meer ruimte is genomen voor rustpunten.

Ik denk dat ik het nieuwe album dan gewoon maar eens moet uitchecken.

Er zijn slechtere dingen om geld aan uit te geven in elk geval! (Ik moet eigenlijk de vynil versie scoren, maar ja, geld is op het moment geen groot goed bij mij, dus dan maar alleen de cd.)

Op het nieuwe album Wavering radiant zijn de lage gitaren verdwenen die zo mooi waren op de voorgaande platen. Het album heeft zelfs af en toe een "poppy feeling". De Tool invloeden liggen er nu dikker op dan ooit.
Leuke plaat maar niet het beste dat ze ooit gedaan hebben.

Ik heb ze donderdag live gezien op Dour, en was zeer onder de indruk. De band nooit veel aandacht gegeven, maar Oceanic en Panopticon stonden wel al in de kast, voor als ik er aan toe kwam, nu dus. De Tool invloeden waren vooral live erg aanwezig, maar het was vooral erg indrukwekkend hoe de band van een post-rock achtige opbouw uitmondt in sludge en daarmee een intense muur van geluid creeert. Ik ga nu de platen aandachtig luisteren, ben benieuwd of het net zo innemend is als live.

ISIS, the innovative Los Angeles-by-way-of-Boston-based band, has released the following statement:

"ISIS has reached an end. It's hard to try to say it in any delicate way, and it is a truth that is best spoken plainly.

"This end isn't something that occurred overnight and it hasn't been brought about by a single cataclysmic fracture in the band. Simply put, ISIS has done everything we wanted to do, said everything we wanted to say.

"In the interest of preserving the love we have of this band, for each other, for the music made and for all the people who have continually supported us, it is time to bring it to a close. We've seen too many bands push past the point of a dignified death and we all promised one another early on in the life of the band that we would do our best to ensure ISIS would never fall victim to that syndrome.

"We've had a much longer run than we ever expected we would and accomplished a great deal more than we ever imagined possible.

"We never set any specific goals when the band was founded other than to make the music we wanted to hear and to play (and to stay true to that ideal), so everything else that has come along the long and winding path has been an absolute gift.

"As with any momentous life-changing decision (which this certainly is for the five of us), we feel a very dynamic range of emotions about this and cannot express all of it within the space of a few sentences, and perhaps it's best to do what we've always done in and let our music speak for us. It is and has been the truest expression of who we are as a collective and in some ways who we are as individuals for the 13 years in which we've been together.

"The last, and perhaps most important, thing we might say in relation to all this is how grateful we are for the people that have supported us over the years. It is a lengthy list that would include those who put out our records, those that played on them and put them to tape, the many bands with whom we shared the stage, all of our family, friends and companions who supported us in our individual lives and thus made it possible for us to continue on in the band, and most importantly those who truly listened to our music whether in recorded form or by coming to out to our shows (or both).

"It is quite true that we would never have done what we have without those people, that is many of you who are reading this. Our words can never fully express what we feel, but we hope that our music and the efforts made to bring it into being can serve as a more proper expression of gratitude for this life and for everyone in it. Thank you.

"In more immediate and practical terms, the tour we are about to embark upon is indeed our last. We are hoping that these final live rituals can help us bring a close to the life of this band in a celebratory and reverent way, and also provide us with a chance to say goodbye to many of those that have supported us over the years.

"While there is a measure of sadness that comes with the passing of this band, we hope that the final days can be joyous ones during which any and all that wish to come and join us will do so.

"It seems fitting that the last show of the tour and of our active existence will take place in Montreal, the site of the very first ISIS show in 1997 (though that was an unintentional move when booking the show initially).

"After the tour we also plan to follow through with other projects set in motion some time ago — pursuing the completion of a final EP, compiling live audio and visual material for future releases, and generally doing whatever we can to make our music available for as long as there are people who wish to hear it.
