Primordial
Primordial
Line-up:
A.A. Nemtheanga (Vocals)
Ciáran MacUiliam (Guitars)
Michael O'Floinn (Guitars)
Pól MacAmlaigh (Bass)
Simon O'Laoghaire (Drums)
Imrama (1995)
A Journey's End (1998)
Spirit the Earth Aflame (2000)
Storm Before Calm (2002)

Review van "Storm before Calm" van vampire-magazine:
Primordial are without a single doubt one of the greatest pagan/black metal bands to have ever roamed our planet. They have grown, progressed and developed ever since their 'Imrama' debut album, which is still an album I play as often as possible. Primordial has become slightly less extreme since then, but 'Storm before calm' clearly proves their (black) metal influences are still firmly rooted in the music. The faster blackened parts in the music are great, but I think Primordial are at their best when the pace drops and they create that almost melancholic, dreamlike atmosphere that can be both peaceful or aggressive. Singer A.A. Nemtheanga has a beautiful, emotional and variated voice. In my opinion his vocals are at their best in the dramatic clean parts. The shivers go down my spine when he screams out his words. As always, Primordial is original, so it's practically impossible to compare them to any other band, in whatever genre. As always, the lyrics about Celtic/Irish history and few other subjects are well worth reading again. The production is excellent, and is definitely also one of the elements that determines the authentic atmosphere on the album. The songs are very long, only the tracks "Suns first rays" (acoustic instrumental) and "What sleeps within" stay under six minutes. Nevertheless Primordial maintain the atmosphere, thanks to the large amount of musical and atmospherical variation within the songs. "Sons of the morrigan" is a very different, weird track with an almost spooky atmosphere and spoken parts, but if definitely good. All in all this is a fantastic, moody album I can recommend to any fan of (ofcourse) Primordial, but also the older Hades Almighty and Borknagar (The olden domain).

Primordial - Spirit The Earth Aflame (8,5/10) - Ireland - 2000
Genre: Dark Metal
Label: Hammerheart
Playing time: 51:18
Band homepage: Primordial
Tracklist:
1. Spirit The Earth Aflame
2. Gods To The Godless
3. The Soul Must Sleep
4. The Burning Season
5. Glorious Dawn
6. The Cruel Sea
7. Children Of The Harvest
8. To Enter Pagan (Bonus)
How do those Irish manage to do it? No matter, which bands find their way to us, be it CRUACHAN, WAYLANDER, GEASA or PRIMORDIAL, all somehow are - different...
PRIMORDIAL have consequently continued to tread the path they had taken two years ago with their Hammerheart-debut "A Journey's End". With some few exceptions, the songs come over very doomey and solemn, building up a very intense atmosphere, which holds you in its thrall from the beginning and which also makes it quite difficult to categorize the Irishmen, what is a big plus on their behalf!
The only bands that you could remotely name as direction are MY DYING BRIDE, although PRIMORDIAL are not as melancholic and depressed, and BORKNAGAR in their calmer moments, but they do not reach this strange intensity...
Partly melodic, partly Black Metallic guitars meet mostly deep, theatralic clean vocals and, as a reminiscence of thir Black Metal-past, some croaky vocal-elements and are bound together tightly by slight folky influences.
The info-flyer says "PRIMORDIAL don't consider themselves as Black Metal, Celtic or Pagan band, they are simply PRIMORDIAL." I couldn't have said it better.

Kutwijf.
Kop dicht, Thorko
Plaag schreef:[..]
