It's from that period and in that band, that the idea for P:407 was born in the minds of Joris Timmersmans and Filip Dupont (better known from Gorath & Mahlstrom). Knowing that the project consists of this duo, my expectations rose quite high. "The Post Dagger Experience" creates a sort of atmosphere-laden musical landscape... I tend to say 'a mix of influences or styles' a lot about bands, but here it's more unique: it's a blend of emotions. The clean vocals are tender, touching and almost solemn, and paradoxically enough, they add significantly to the music's 'feeling' through their emotionlessness. Everybody’s favourite Belgian, F.Dupont, is back with another project, called “P:407 – The Post Dagger Experience”. He had managed to catch me off-guard with Gorath and this time he surprises me again with his current project, which is totally different than one would expect from him...
Knowing his extreme metal background, I was totally caught by surprise when I put “P:407” in my cd-player. Expecting another piece of blackened metal, it turned out to be something completely different. Apparently F.Dupont wants to show his softer, more melancholic side, because the music is heavily influenced by the later day Katatonia, Anathema and the more progressive tendencies of Opeth. Perhaps he wants to impress the gothic girl crowd, I really do not know. Anyway, the music offered on “The Post Dagger Experience” is quite varied, ranging from a pretty straightforward rocker in the Katatonia vein (“Indulgence”) to more epic songs with progressive tendencies (“Despondency”, “Demerit”) heavily influenced by Opeth and Anathema. The quality of the compositions is quite good, however, they do not come near his sources of inspiration in terms of atmosphere and songwriting skills. “P:407” comes along nicely, but that is all. Vocalist Joris Timmermans sounds like a cross-section of Jonas Renske (Katatonia) and Micheal Äkerfeldt (Opeth) and does a nice job, besides some minor hick-ups here and there. For demo standards it all sounds acceptable, but I do not like the mix a lot, because the voice is way too much in the forefront, compared with the guitars and drums, which takes a lot of potential power away from the songs. The vocals are good, but not good enough to make up for this - in my eyes/ears - mistake.
“The Post Dagger Experience” is an enjoyable demo with decent songmaterial, but does not come near the emotional power of Katatonia, Anathema and Opeth. The mix of the demo is another thing which bothers me a lot, though it is acceptable for demostandards. This is perhaps a review with mixed feelings, though leaning more towards the positive side.

doompad samen met Joris Timmermans waarmee hij nog speelde in The Quiescent. Op deze EP staat een viertal nummers waarbij goed geluisterd is naar bands als Anathema en Katatonia, wat vooral gitaarsgewijs goed te horen is. De algehele sound en sfeer van The Post Dagger Experience doet koud en kil aan. Dit probeert zanger Joris ook met zijn stem te doen, en mijns inziens slaagt hij daar maar ten dele in. De type zang die hij probeert is goed te vergelijken met Katatonia, alleen zodra er wat hoger gezongen moet worden klinkt het eerlijk gezegd erg slap. En dat is erg jammer, daar deze vier nummers goed laten horen dat het wat componeren betreft er twee flinke talenten in dit duo zitten, alleen de zang verpest het gewoonweg. Dus een tip aan de heren; of zoek een andere zanger of laat Joris zangles nemen, zodat de zang meer als een sterk punt gezien kan worden. Dan ben ik er zeker van dat P:407 zich kan meten met hun voorbeelden.

Een vage bandnaam, P:407. De naam doet al vermoeden dat de band er niet is om het brede publiek aan te spreken. Gelukkig zijn ze hier zelf ook van op de hoogte, terwijl het juist opvallend is dat ondanks het technische gehalte de muziek niet compleet onmogelijk in het gehoor ligt.
Deze tweede demo van de Belgische tweemansformatie bevat vier nummers en muzikaal heeft het wel wat. Helaas betekent dat voor de twee heren gelijk ook dat ze iets doen wat al vele malen eerder gedaan is. Daarbij kan de zangstem, die emotieloos zou moeten zijn, mij totaal niet bekoren. Het geheel doet zeer stereotyp progressief aan en daarmee lijken ze zeer goed geluisterd te hebben naar het nieuwere materiaal van Anathema. Opvallend is dat een van de leden Filip Dupont is, bekend van een aantal stevige black metal projecten, die met dit project een totaal andere weg ingeslagen lijkt te zijn. De twee heren beheersen hun instrumenten behoorlijk goed en zoals gezegd is het technische gehalte goed te noemen en het complete plaatje is dan ook een aardige progressieve voorstelling. Voor demo-standaarden is de productie bovengemiddeld en ik denk dat de heren nog wel wat kunnen bereiken in deze richting.
DREUN (B)
Hoewel het leuk is om cd's te ontvangen van overal ter wereld, hebben bands uit eigen land zeker evenveel charme. Het Limburgse P:407, vroeger bekend onder de naam Project 407, herleeft na een lange stilte met 'The Post Dagger Experience'. Bezielers zijn nog steeds Filip Dupont en Joris Timmermans. Wie deze twee kent van onder andere The Quiescent, Deceived, Gorath en Mahlstrøm, weet dat ze de nodige portie talent hebben. Maar voor de rest heeft P:407 nauwelijks nog iets gemeen met bovenstaande bands.
'The Post Dagger Experience' bewandelt dezelfde weg als een wat oudere Katatonia, een beetje Opeth, Anathema of Elusive. In dit geval vertaalt zich dat in vier nummers, elk met hun betere en mindere momenten. Vooral muzikaal zit het best snor. Bepaalde momenten zouden zo van Opeth kunnen komen. Melancholie is troef met regenachtige gitaargeluiden en ritmes die constant tussen meeslepend en voortstuwend rollen. Hier en daar steekt er nog een beetje black metal de kop op.
Vocaal heeft P:407 veel weg van de typische jaren '80 gothic- of new wave-zanger: apathisch, vol en toch fragiel. Jammer genoeg is niet alles even toonvast en trefzeker gezongen. Doordat de mix de stem heel erg naar voren haalt, valt dat nog extra op, en gaan er heel wat instrumentale hoogstandjes verloren in de af en toe misschien iets te simplistische lyrics voor dit soort muziek. Laat je dat echter zeker niet stoppen om deze P:407 een kans te geven.

Multi-instrumentalist Filip Dupon’s ‘bio’ of the band is almost painful in its attempts to appear disaffectedly melancholic yet the somewhat wobbly English torpedoes any impact his words may have had. Their lyrics too are unconvincing, trying to paint a drab, depressing palette but more often than not coming across as little more than adolescent moaning. Mercifully, this Belgian duo’s stab at atmospheric, doleful, gothic-tinged metal is far more successful than their poetry, even if it does owe a massive debt to their primary influences.
The opening strains of ‘Indulgence’ immediately catapult us back in time to 1996 and when Katatonia’s ‘Brave Murder Day’ was king of all it surveyed. The talented Dupon has captured that haunting, droning guitar ambience perfectly, his sonerous leads sounding very much like the work of a Blackheim understudy. Vocalist Joris Timmermans imparts solemn, baritone melodies – deeper and richer than Katatonia’s Jonas, his is a voice far more steeped in traditional eighties goth music and is refreshingly different. Unfortunately, his ability to hold a tune is occasionally called into question and coupled with the fact that the vocals are several notches too high in the mix, casts a slightly unprofessional pall over what is otherwise a competently executed package. Some reverb might have helped as well.
There are four tracks here, including one quasi-ambient instrumental, and the overall quality of the compositions are reasonably high. The standout track is far and away the EP closer ‘Deremit’, lengthy and haunting with the disparate elements fitting together far more effectively. That ever-present ‘K’-word looming at the back of the mind is less evident here too, suggesting that the project may be starting to truly find its own identity. Ultimately, although still requiring some polishing up and squatting very firmly in the shadows of its influences at this moment in time, ‘The Post-Dagger Experience’ is a decent enough stab at the genre.

Filip Dupont - mastermind of progressive black metal formation Gorath - has found the time to write, record and release a new record with that other band of his. P:407. Formerly known as Project 407, he has chosen a somewhat different course for the follow-up to the band's 2003 debut "Seven Days and Seven Songs". "The Post Dagger Experience" goes for a more progressive melancholic direction, which will probably appeal to fans of later Anathema, Opeth, Katatonia and the likes. For a demo EP the production values are reasonably good, despite the fact that one can't deny that it's limitations surface every once in a while. Vocally the album isn't all that interesting as the delivery is rather monotonous and uninspired. Dupont has grown confident as a songwriter, as this record implies. Due to its short nature this EP is over before you know it and that's my biggest gripe with this recording. Artwork and lay-out are in the usual style and fit the record accordingly. All I can say is: record in a real studio next time, find someone with more engaging vocals and you've got a winner on your hands here.
ROCKTRIBUNE (Belgium)
Fans van Katatonia en andere melancholische rock (sommige mierenneukers zouden hier erg graag het woordje “gothic” voor hebben geplaatst, maar ik vertik het gewoon) moeten nu zeker verder lezen, want het tweede wapenfeit van het Limburgse P:407 zou jullie wel eens kunnen interesseren. De vier songs op “The Post Dagger Experience” mogen dan misschien niet overlopen van de originaliteit, ze weten wel een erg pakkende sfeer op te roepen. De heren Dupont (alle instrumenten) en Timmermans (zang) durven hun nek uitsteken en voor de dag te komen met fraaie, melancholische composities in plaats van zoveel mogelijk riffs en agressie in één nummer te steken. Van agressie is er hier eigenlijk helemaal geen sprake en dit wordt ook geen enkel moment gemist. Als we het ding geen vergelijken met voorganger “Seven Days And Seven Songs” dan vallen er wel enkele dingen op. Eerst en vooral klinkt “TPDE” een stuk voller en professioneler (vooral de geprogrammeerde drums, die op de eersteling erg mager en kil klonken, komen veel beter tot hun recht), iets wat het totaalbeeld natuurlijk enorm goed doet. De nummers, waarvan afsluiter “Demerit” als het absolute hoogtepunt gezien mag worden, zitten ook veel beter in mekaar en vormen ook een meer samenhangend geheel. Tot slot een pluim voor zanger Joris, want zijn keelklanken zijn er echt wel enorm op vooruit gegaan. Dus, dames en heren, zet de oogkleppen eens af en durf ook eens een keertje naar wat anders te luisteren dan enkel maar brute death metal. Er is immers zoveel meer te ontdekken
MINDVIEW (Belgium)
Is het niet met geesteskind Gorath, dan is het wel met dit eigenste project of een andere groep waar Limburger Filip Dupont zich mee moeit. Met P:407 brengt hij alweer vier songs en het was even wennen, maar deze demo-cd is opnieuw een fijn werkje. Oké, Katatonia is nooit ver weg en Joris’ stem komt in het begin wat luid en stroef over maar de melancholische sfeer, de melodieën en riffs zijn cool. Alleen al die eindriff van “Demerit” laat je wezenloos achter. De zang zal het heikel punt blijven, misschien toch wat vaster en af en toe eens een droog gruntje erin stoppen gasten. P:407 (pronounce as [pE | for | O | se-v&n] is one of the current bands of Filip Dupont (ex-Last Funeral/ The Quiescent, Ill Fares The Land). Besides his more black orientated bands Gorath and Mahlstrøm he can reveal his other emotional feelings in this P:407. Together with Joris Timmermans (also ex-Last Funeral/ The Quiescent) he created some tunes in the vein of nowaday's Katatonia, Anathema and Sentenced. Also Tool and Opeth can be described as sources of inspiration, as the bio says. This MCD ‘The Post Dagger Experience’ is the follow up of the 2003-release ‘Seven Days and Seven songs’, which got some nice reviews back then. Now this new record contains four recordings of which one instrumental. And his has to be said: the info in the bio doesn’t lie. Influences of the referred bands can be recognized. The MCD, which was recorded in the home-studio of Filip Dupont has a good sound and once used to the voice of Joris, fans of the above bands will surely be positively surprised by this record. “Indulgence”, “Despondency” and “Demerit” are more then just ‘good’ songs. Together with Guardian Heliothrope this band shows that Belgium secretly holds some talented bands in this genre.

De heren Dupont (alle instrumenten) en Timmermans (zang) durven hun nek uitsteken en voor de dag te komen met fraaie, melancholische composities in plaats van zoveel mogelijk riffs en agressie in één nummer te steken. Van agressie is er hier eigenlijk helemaal geen sprake en dit wordt ook geen enkel moment gemist. Als we het ding geen vergelijken met voorganger “Seven Days And Seven Songs” dan vallen er wel enkele dingen op. Eerst en vooral klinkt “TPDE” een stuk voller en professioneler (vooral de geprogrammeerde drums, die op de eersteling erg mager en kil klonken, komen veel beter tot hun recht), iets wat het totaalbeeld natuurlijk enorm goed doet. De nummers, waarvan afsluiter “Demerit” als het absolute hoogtepunt gezien mag worden, zitten ook veel beter in mekaar en vormen ook een meer samenhangend geheel. Tot slot een pluim voor zanger Joris, want zijn keelklanken zijn er echt wel enorm op vooruit gegaan. Dus, dames en heren, zet de oogkleppen eens af en durf ook eens een keertje naar wat anders te luisteren dan enkel maar brute death metal. Er is immers zoveel meer te ontdekken
MINDVIEW (Belgium)
Is het niet met geesteskind Gorath, dan is het wel met dit eigenste project of een andere groep waar Limburger Filip Dupont zich mee moeit. Met P:407 brengt hij alweer vier songs en het was even wennen, maar deze demo-cd is opnieuw een fijn werkje. Oké, Katatonia is nooit ver weg en Joris’ stem komt in het begin wat luid en stroef over maar de melancholische sfeer, de melodieën en riffs zijn cool. Alleen al die eindriff van “Demerit” laat je wezenloos achter. De zang zal het heikel punt blijven, misschien toch wat vaster en af en toe eens een droog gruntje erin stoppen gasten. P:407 (pronounce as [pE | for | O | se-v&n] is one of the current bands of Filip Dupont (ex-Last Funeral/ The Quiescent, Ill Fares The Land). Besides his more black orientated bands Gorath and Mahlstrøm he can reveal his other emotional feelings in this P:407. Together with Joris Timmermans (also ex-Last Funeral/ The Quiescent) he created some tunes in the vein of nowaday's Katatonia, Anathema and Sentenced. Also Tool and Opeth can be described as sources of inspiration, as the bio says. This MCD ‘The Post Dagger Experience’ is the follow up of the 2003-release ‘Seven Days and Seven songs’, which got some nice reviews back then. Now this new record contains four recordings of which one instrumental. And his has to be said: the info in the bio doesn’t lie. Influences of the referred bands can be recognized. The MCD, which was recorded in the home-studio of Filip Dupont has a good sound and once used to the voice of Joris, fans of the above bands will surely be positively surprised by this record. “Indulgence”, “Despondency” and “Demerit” are more then just ‘good’ songs. Together with Guardian Heliothrope this band shows that Belgium secretly holds some talented bands in this genre.

P407 n’est pas (seulement) le nom d’une nouvelle Peugeot, c’est le projet d’un duo belge : Filip Dupont (tous les instruments, composition musique) et Joris Timmermans (textes et chant). Il s’agit d’un heavy metal à forte connotation gothique, influencé par les grands maîtres que sont Sentenced, Katatonia et dans une moindre mesure, Paradise Lost, surtout pour les riffs, et il faut dire que ces 4 compos tiennent bien la route. Les arrangements sont très sobres, pas de claviers ni de samples, pas de choeurs ni de chant féminin, seulement le noyau métallique pur et dur guitare/basse/batterie/chant, et du coup, il ressort une certaine pudeur mais aussi une authenticité de ces chansons, P407 n’a pas besoin des artifices clinquants et systématiquement employés par tant d’autres pour faire passer ses émotions, bravo pour cela. Petit bémol tout de même, le chant, uniquement clair (dans le registre Katatonia aussi) pourrait être plus soigné, je pense que c’est la principale chose à travailler pour ce duo, car pour tout le reste, P407 tient le bon bout. Pour une démo, la production est excellente, donc messieurs des labels, donnez une petite chance à ces deux gaillards, ils font du bon boulot !

Hinter ungewöhnlichen Bandnamen steht normalerweise auch ungewöhnliche Musik. In der Regel erhofft man sich neben dem außergewöhnlichen Stil auch Außergewöhnliche (gute) Qualität. Aber das Musik-Business ist kein Wunschkonzert. Und so quäle ich mich seit einiger Zeit durch das zweite Demo von P:407. Die Qualen rühren aber nicht mal von der Musik selbst. Diese kann man durchaus als gelungen und hochklassig einstufen. Irgendwo zwischen TOOL und neueren KATATONIA hat man schon beeindruckend seine Nische gefunden und musiziert munter in die dunkle Nacht hinein. „Indulgence“ wartet mit schönen, schweren Melodiebögen auf. Während „Despondency“ mehr rockt, aber mit der gleichen Schwere aufwartet. Das Instrumental ist überflüssig und erinnert am ehesten an uninspirierte OPETH-Momente. Auch der abschließende Song fällt ein wenig gegen die ersten zwei ab und lässt ein wenig die Kompaktheit vermissen, ist aber immer noch gut genug um nicht völlig in die Belanglosigkeit abzudriften. Warum ich am Anfang von Qualen schrieb, wollt ihr wissen? Leider von dem Aushängeschild jeder Band, dem Sänger.
Dieser nölt und quengelt sich völlig uninspiriert und talentfrei durch die Songs und hat offenbar nicht einen Funken Talent. Der Mann trifft in guten Momenten drei, in schlechten nicht mal einen Ton. Hört sich in den miesen Parts an wie ein besoffener Thilo von LACRIMOSA. Und der kann schon nicht singen. Liebe Jungs von P:407 holt euch bitte einen neuen Sänger mit Talent und Stimme, dann würde ich euch auch mit Freuden auf einer KATATONIA-Tour als Support beklatschen und bejubeln. So bleibt es leider bei einer durchschnittlichen Note. Sieben für die Musik und einen für den Sänger, macht nach Adam Riese eine Vier.

I really don’t know how to start this review off, so let’s start by saying that I really admire these guys. Unfortunately, I don’t admire them for their music. I visited their website and they admit upfront that they don’t expect everyone to like their music and it’s not for everyone. Also, they have the balls to post not only the good reviews of their demos, but they also post the negative reviews. These guys obviously live in the real world, and I applaud them for that. Okay, now let’s get to the bad part – the music. P407 is a two man project. They seem to split all the musical duties, except vocals. The music is okay for a demo, I suppose. The instrumental song here is actually pretty cool and mellow. It’s nice to relax to. The primary complaint I have about this band is the vocals and lyrics, which I’m typically a stickler for. For fuck’s sake, I just can’t stand them. The music is comparable to something like Katatonia or Paradise Lost, as far as being depressing, mellow, and the like. However, the vocals just plain stink. They just sound out of tune and uninspired. When so many bands do it far better, it’s just hard to praise these. The lyrics are pretty inane as well. To the lyricist, I’m sure they have some special meaning, but when I hear someone singing about burgers, onion rings, and Cinderella to music like this I just have to shake my head. Maybe it’s just me. As I mentioned, these guys know not everyone is going to like their music, and I am one of those people. The vocals are just terrible, and it really takes away from the rest of the music. If you’re the kind of person who just zones out the vocals and focuses on the music you may be interested in this band, but honestly, the twenty minutes of this demo are excruciating for me to listen to, save for the instrumental track. I really would not recommend this to anyone. Still, check it out and see for yourself.

Nee, niet de broertjes "uut Hasselt-county" van die reclame over het nieuwe rijden, maar de versie van onze zuiderburen. Vroeger noemden Filip Dupont en Joris Timmermans de tweemans-band nog Project 405. En toen werd er al een demo uitgebracht onder de naam "Seven Days & Seven Songs". Maar de jaren verstreken (twee jaar, maar toch...) en andere prioriteiten kregen de, ehm, prioriteit. Tot ze in 2005 toch maar weer samen gingen werken. Een nieuwe start en dus een nieuwe naam: P:403. Als Katatonia en Anathema in Belgie waren begonnen én ieder een bandlid af liet staan, dan zou je de muziek kunnen krijgen die er op "The Post Dagger Experience" staat. Nog lang niet dezelfde kwaliteit, maar het gaat wel de goede richting op. De zanglijnen mogen wel wat minder eentonig. Maar Joris laat wel een goede melancholische stem horen. De valse start op het openingsnummer "Indulge" maakt hij de rest van de demo ruimschoots goed. Alle instrumenten zijn verder ingespeeld door Filip. Als ik hem zo hoor drummen, bassen en gitaarspelen, dan heeft hij tijdens zijn lessen aan elk instrument evenveel aandacht gegeven. De drums hebben echter de voorkeur, maar daarentegen hebben de gitaren een beter geluid. Voor een demo klinkt het geheel sowieso al naar behoren. Als project is het een leuk eindprodukt geworden waarvan de muziek uitermate geschikt zou zijn voor een label als Nuclear Blast.

Any happiness can't be found in the world of P:407; the band knows how to create a drizzling, depressing atmosphere. Unfortunately, that's about the only positive thing I can say about this demo, for the musicality of this band is depressing me too: they don't play very tight and the vocals are downright weak. The songs could do with a quality impulse too to create some tension. Enough to work on for P:407!

Project 407 were born with the goal to bring something different to Joris Timmermans and Filip Dupont’ previous musical experiences. Both guys were playing in the traditional death metal act named The Quiescent (active for more than a decade in the north territories of our beautiful country). The project already released a first demo work titled «Seven Days and Seven Songs» (see our demo reviews section winter 2003-04). What P : 407 both members really are doing is delivering a very personal and emotional music … far from we have the use to listen to. Their sound is much slower than what you hear out there now and their universe evolves somewhere between Paradise Lost, Him and Sisters of Mercy… and that’s fine (mainly if you’re into this kind of stuff) but the problem is for my opinion concentrated on the vocal work. «Despondency» is the perfect summarize of P : 407’s music, it’s over four minutes long and cool as hell but the clean vocal approach undermines most of the impact. No use for a fight, «The Post Dagger Experience» is a very personal work dedicated to a selected audience… so you’ve better check it by yourself.

We feel snappy being part of this larger platform, because it wants to support artists who do not persistently chose to act within mainstream circuits and movements. In order to continuously provoke existing boundaries. Neither do we believe in ready-made opinions or too strict a definition. We want to keep our finger to the pulse of innovation, crossover and experiment.
