Belgian cosmological progressive black metal band Gorath has signed with Descent Productions for the release of the second full length album ‘The fourth era’. The recording sessions are in full progress at the moment. The release of the album is scheduled for June 2006.
The Fourth Era is a concept album about the foretold prophecies by the ancient Mayan civilisation. Their star written science exposed extraordinary views on cosmology and future history. Their perception of time was endless. And their spiritual way of life was and example for today's world.
The album will contain eight songs:

6. Zenith Point

DARKNESS (Germany)
GORATH stammen aus Belgien und blicken schon auf ein paar Releases zurück, mit „The Fourth Era“ will man sich nun mehr Aufmerksamkeit erspielen. Als progressiv bezeichnete wurde die Band auf den Infozetteln bezeichnet. Dies kann man ihn auch nicht wirklich absprechen, will ich auch gar nicht, einzig sollte darauf hingewiesen werden, dass sich die Belgier nicht so sperrig zeigen wie zum Beispiel ANSUR, sondern dennoch kalt und finster wirken. Verzweifelte Melodien, die für eine dunkle, Angstheischende Atmosphäre sorgen zeichnen GORATH aus. Die Songs befinden sich allesamt im Midtempobereich, werden durch Riffs, die teils wirklich progressiv sind, aufgepeppt und der rohe Sound tut sein übriges. Ansonsten schleppt man sich durch acht Stücke + einen Bonustrack, um am Ende festzustellen, das man es doch glatt noch einmal durchlaufen lassen wolle. Die Stimme krächzt fies die Texte herunter, befinden sich dabei aber einige Tonarten tiefer als die durchschnittliche Black Metal Band. Das Knüppeln wird hier ganz klein geschrieben, die Drums wirken eigentlich nur im Hintergrund um die Songs zusammenzuhalten, auch wenn es den einen oder anderen Ausrastern gibt. So schwankt man zwischen großartigen Bands wie DARKTHRONE, DEATHSPELL OMEGA und ab und an auch mal ein Fünkchen SATYRICON hin und her. Allerdings dienten diese der Band nur als Inspiration und nicht als Vorlage zum Kopieren. Alles in allem bieten GORATH ein starkes, schleppendes und atmosphärisches Album. Welches von Kälte und Verzweiflung dominiert wird. Fesselnde Melodien, eine etwas ungewohnte Stimme, eigentlich passt alles. Doch leider macht der Sound an manchen Stellen einen Strich durch die Rechnung. Sagen wir so, er hätte besser sein können, doch eigentlich passt er auch.

Boy, is this tough for a reviewer who claims to be objective: Gorath is a one-man-project by Vampire Magazine colleague Filip, and is one of the two releases on a new label called Descent Productions, by personal friend en former Vampire reviewer Geert. Nevertheless I would have liked the album just as much if this personal connection had not been there… So trust me on my word on this one. On the debut album Gorath displayed a sound that reminded strongly of the better Norwegian bands such as Mayhem and Satyricon, of which last one I know one that that is Filip’s favorite act. Well, that is still the matter on this second album “The Fourth Era”, but this one contains much more groove!
Apart from that, Gorath does not shun to use lesser common aspects in the genre of black metal, such as, apart from a death metal grunt on occasions also the use of multiple clean voices (just check ‘The Fifth Birth’, which also differs from the vast black majority by its arrangements. Indeed, Gorath plays black metal, but with a slightly personal touch. Perhaps that is also illustrated by the fact that Gorah refrains from using ‘true evil’ nicknames, and personally I think there is nothing wrong with that. The album opens very strong with ‘Sagittarius’, which is swinging like hell, in the vein of, indeed, Satyricon on their later releases. Gorath calls its music cosmological black metal, but do not expect orchestrations like The Kovenant. See it as a well taken care of progressive style of black metal, which is not so easily directly to be compared to other bands. The cosmological aspect is more to be found within the concept: on this album Filip took inspiration from ancient Mayan 2012 theories (only six more years to wait). That swinging aspect is carried on on ‘Xibalba Be’, including a massive ‘drum’ which is also used by Satyricon. In the third song more Mayhem-influences show up, an influence that is emphasized by the bonus track, a cover of Mayhem’s ‘Buried By Time And Dust’. Of course it is easy to keep on referring to Satyricon and Mayhem, and that is not right, as that does not cover the cargo. What is the same, is that Gorath has quality high on its priority list, combined with a powerful sound, something that is not seen often among the many one-man-projects. What Gorath does have in common with those projects is the use of electronic drums, but they are mixed in very powerful and with over-the-top hyper fast parts dosed at the right moments, at a paste which is –in my humble opinion- not possible for a drummer of flesh and blood. Another comparison that I’ve read is Darkthrone, but I can’t come into that one, as Darkthrone thrives on a cold nihilistic atmosphere, which is not to be found back in Gorath’s sound or songs. Final conclusion: Gorath’s second album brings us Norwegian inspired black metal with a touch of its own, an album made of real songs and with a sound that is very good. And although the album is 666% black metal, I believe that also people who are not solely into black metal might be appealed by this “The Fourth Era”. The say that reviewers are frustrated musicians: well, with this album Filip/ Gorath makes it clear that there are exceptions to that rule, as “The Fourth Era” is an album on which he, and the Belgian scene can be proud. Do check out their site and convince yourself. Belgium is more and more turning into Hellgium, and as a black metal fan I certainly feel no regrets about that… <<<

Mangelnden Willen zur Weiterentwicklung kann man Gorath wirklich nicht unterstellen. Wer F. Duponts Schaffen ein wenig verfolgt hat, kennt die stilistischen Änderungen, die sich am vergangenen Material ausmachen lassen. Vom noch recht unspektakulären, Riff-orientierten "Haunting the December Chords", welches allerdings schon erste progressive Ansätze beinhaltete, über das simplere, Darkthrone-inspirierte "The Blueprints for Revolution" zum modernen, melodiösen Black Metal von "Elite", der sich stärker an neuen Satyricon orientierte, ging der Weg Goraths. So wundert es auch nicht, dass das neue Werk "The Fourth Era" - dessen Stil als "Cosmological Progressive Black Metal" bezeichnet wird - wiederum mit neuen Elementen und überraschenden Momenten aufwartet. Das Kosmologische bezieht sich dabei wohl eher auf das dem Album zugrunde liegende, lyrische Konzept. Laut dem Maya-Kalender ist am 22. Dezember 2012 erst einmal Schluss mit unserer Zivilisation, allerdings nicht verbunden mit totaler Apokalypse und Vernichtung des Lebens, sondern verbunden mit einem Neuanfang, dem Aufbau eines neuen Gesellschaftssystems. Jeder der mit unserer Gesellschaft voller geistloser, konsumorientierter Schafe nicht klarkommt, mag sich wünschen, dass die Maya recht hatten, aber das ist ein anderes Thema. Im Vordergrund sollte die Musik stehen und die ist auf "The Fourth Era" wirklich gelungen. Gorath verbinden verschiedene Strömungen des Black Metal zu einer interessanten Melange. Der Einfluss Satyricons ist sicher immer noch herauszuhören, verbindet sich aber auf angenehme Art mit einer Prise Watain und einem Schuss Deathspell Omega. Die sechs Eigenkompositionen übertreffen zum Großteil die Fünf-Minuten-Marke und sind sehr abwechslungsreich gehalten, ohne zerfahren zu klingen. Nein, der Abwechslungsreichtum stört nie den atmosphärischen Fluss des Albums. Im Gegenteil, "The Fourth Era" ist sogar recht eingängig geworden, wenn auch vielleicht nicht beim ersten Kontakt. Gleich "Xibalba Be" ist eine richtig geniale Hymne, getragen von mystischen Melodien und beschwörenden Chören. "Create And Renew" hat einen spacigen Charakter, der etwas an Voivod erinnert. Die verwendeten Gesangseffekte haben mich etwas an die Veganer aus den alten Commander Perkins-Hörspielen erinnert, falls die noch jemand kennt. "The Fifth Birth" ist mit Klargesang, akustischen Zwischenspielen und sehr schönem, gut heraushörbarem Bass-Spiel einer der herausragenden Songs des Albums, er vermag eine wunderbare Stimmung zu erzeugen, der melancholische Teil mit dem verstimmten Klaviersound hat mit z.B. sehr gefallen. "Cosmogenesis" begeistert mit vielschichtigen Gitarren-Spuren und gesteigerter Eingängigkeit. "The Astronaut Of Palenque" beginnt schon richtig genial mit einem Blast-Beat, der von akustischer Gitarre begleitet wird. Textlich geht es hier um eine Grabplatte aus der Maya-Zeit, die laut einigen Wissenschaftlern einen Raumfahrer in seiner Raumkapsel zeigt und ein Indiz für einen Besuch Außerirdischer in früherer Zeit darstellen soll. So interessant wie der Text gestaltet sich auch der zugrundeliegende Song und kann durchweg überzeugen. Gorath haben ein wirklich tolles Album geschaffen, dem ich es wünsche, dass es die Art aufgeschlossener Hörer bekommt, die sich die Zeit nehmen, sich mit dem Songmaterial angemessen auseinanderzusetzen. Das hat "The Fourth Era" nämlich verdient. Da Kosmologie und Science-Fiction in der extremen Musik eh zu wenig vorkommen, gibt es von mir noch einen Bonuspunkt oben drauf. Nur das "Buried By Time And Dust"-Cover als Bonus-Track hätte man sich sparen können, aber das schmälert das Werk in keinster Weise. Eine eindeutige Kaufempfehlung. <<<

Gorath - The Fourth Era

In 2005 verscheen het debuutalbum Elite van deze jonge Belgische black metalband. Een aardig album, dat echter iets té veel overeenkomsten met het recente werk van Satyricon vertoonde. Iets meer dan een jaar later verschijnt via het nieuwe label Descent Records het tweede album, The Fourth Era, dat een stap vooruit is geworden.
Opener Sagittarius geeft een prima indicatie van het groeiproces dat Gorath heeft doorgemaakt: de Satyricon-invloeden liggen er niet meer zo dik bovenop en de lange, uitgesponnen nummers zijn in compositorisch opzicht meer volwassen geworden. Qua sfeer roept The Fourth Era meer dan eens referenties op aan het nieuwe werk van Enslaved. Het bij tijd en wijle melancholische gitaarwerk doet bovendien soms denken aan Agalloch. Verder valt de heldere, moderne sound van het album in positieve zin op.
Naast de eerder genoemde opener verdient het nummer The Astronaut of Palenque aparte vermelding. Hier blijkt de band het meest op dreef te zijn. Vooral het begin, waarin razendsnelle black metal gecombineerd wordt met akoestisch gitaarwerk, is overweldigend. Er kunnen echter ook enkele kritiekpunten aangestipt worden. Zo is de cleane zang op The Fifth Birth niet erg overtuigend. Ook zou men – op een enigszins lullige manier- kunnen beweren dat het materiaal op The Fourth Era nog steeds niet erg origineel is.
Feit is echter wél dat de muziek op dit album gewoon prima in elkaar zit. Met de goed uitgevoerde Mayhem-cover Buried by Time and Dust wordt het album lekker fel afgesloten. Al met al dus gewoon een goed album. Als de band met ieder nieuw album dezelfde progressie weet te boeken, kunnen we nog erg mooi materiaal verwachten in de toekomst.

Gorath will enter the Shumcot Studio (Demonizer, Aguynguerran, Paragon Impure,...) for drum recording and mixing August this year. At this moment almost all vocals, guitars and bass guitars are recorded at our own Crestfallen Studio. Gorath's 3rd album will be entitled "Misotheism" and will hold seven tracks, lasting all together for about 45 minutes.

Ik heb het album sinds een paar dagen in m'n bezit. Ik weet het, ik ben een beetje laat maar toch...
Ik heb The Fourth era nu een aantal keren beluisterd en wat ik hoor bevalt me zeer goed. Moderne black metal met duidelijke referenties naar de roots. Het ene moment episch en groots en het andere moment ineens beenhard en agressief. Erg gaaf.
Ik hoor de naam Satyricon vaak vallen in verbinding met Gorath maar dat vind ik nog wel meevallen. En dan nog hoor ik er eerder het oude Satyricon werk in dan het nieuwe. Gorath heeft meer sfeer en rockt een stuk minder. Wat ik alleen maar als een positief punt kan zien.
Ik ben trouwens wel blij dat ze nu een echte drummer hebben. Want de drumcomputer viel wel een beetje op. Vooral in de stukken waar de bas-drum snel ging rollen. Dat was het enige minpunt wat ik zo aan The Fourth era kon vinden.

Klopt het trouwens dat Dissection ook een invloed is geweest op The Fourth era? Ik hoorde een vertrouwd sfeertje en na heel lang nadenken deed het me nog het meest aan Dissection denken.

Ik bedoel ook niet echt dat ik typische Dissection riff-werk terug hoor op The Fourth era...maar meer het sfeertje dat me een beetje aan Dissection doet denken.
