Agalloch
Magistrale muziek!
http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=305

Geweldige band trouwens.

Klinkt erg interessant mensen!

Recensie van "The mantle":
Agalloch - 'The mantle' cd
The first thing you’ll notice when picking up this cd is the stylishly designed and printed booklet, containing all lyrics, nice photo’s and a balanced layout, all printed with high quality silver-print. Moving on to the music; the album starts with a mysterious folk introductiontrack, smoothly blending into the second track which starts as a folk song backed up by drums. Then an acoustic guitar solo and electrical guitar jump in; all in all building a longlasting and extensive intro to the album. This sets the tone for the rest of the album: metal mixed with folk music in a very epic way. Sometimes a bit experimental and diverse because of the use of many instruments and a little guitarfx here and there. The overall atmosphere of the album is lingering, nonconformist and trend-less; no basic songwriting is used here, instead the album is almost classical in it’s compositioning, using grand epic climaxes and lots of different genres, including depressive and doomy, trance-inducing and dronish multilayered parts, suddenly turning into emorock, into black metal using doublebass, twin guitarparts and fastpaced guitarriffs, and then back into dreamy and soothing folk. The album incorporates clean vocals, choirs, (dual) black metal vocals, whispers, speech; the alternating between all of these create a unique atmosphere. As for the instruments used, besides the usual metal-setting, you will find wellplayed guitarsolo’s, chimes, synths, classical guitars, ebow, hand-made instruments and soundscapes, contrabass, trombone, bells, accordion, mandolin... The list goes on. This band has often been compared to Ulver’s debut “Bergtatt”, and it’s true that both albums use classical twin- and sologuitar parts in almost identical way, but overall, this comparison does not do justice (to both), as Agalloch created a much more epic and extensive work, with a very different, perhaps more depressive and definately more experimental atmosphere. As for the production, my opinion is that it is too clean and too polished; I would have not mind if the album would’ve been a bit more raw, leaving a little bit more room to guess. I assume this is caused by endless digitally correcting and enhancing of the album; a process that is never finished once you’re in it. An other thing that bothers me a bit is the use of black metal vocals; they seem forced and are not necessarily a positive contribution to the album. Most of the tracks blend into each other so you will not always notice where a track has ended and a new track has started. Experiencing this, alongside with the length of the album may cause to seem it’s a long sit to listen to all the songs fully concentrated, but since the album is so diverse, you’re taken from climax to climax and you will experience this with nothing then amazement.
