Kringel, who replaces Sean Malone (who can't participate in the reunion because of teaching and work commitments) in CYNIC's reunion lineup, has been involved with the band since the pre-"Focus" days and toured with the band in Europe in support of the CD. He also played bass on the classic and much-sought-after PORTAL demos and toured the U.K. with Paul and Sean's AEON SPOKE project. Teegarden also previously toured with CYNIC in support of "Focus", while Santiago — who is said to be "the man behind AGHORA" — has been around the CYNIC camp since 1993-94 and was one of Masvidal's guitar students in Miami back in the day.

According to Masvidal, guitarist Jason Gobel was approached about participating in the reunion, but was forced to turn it down due to family and work commitments. However, he gave the rest of the group his blessings to proceed and is said to be "honored" to have Santiago as his replacement.

The group has issued the following update on the recording process:

"Sean Reinert finished the drum tracks a couple of days ago. The drumming will set a new standard in (heavy fusion). The recording is done at the Space Lab Studios in Oedt/Moers, near Düsseldorf in Germany, which is fxxxing in the middle of nowhere! The songs now sound so amazing that it will be difficult to describe the style. Tony Choy has also done eight tracks of killer bass playing. It sounds thick and it has a crazy fxxxing groove!.. This is going to be sick, sick as hell. After that it's up to Patrick Mameli and Tony J.J. to take this project to the next level."

C-187 will tentatively hit the road in the fall. More information will be made available soon.

AEON SPOKE, the progressive, ethereal-rock project featuring CYNIC members Paul Masvidal (vocals, guitar) and Sean Reinert (drums), will release its self-titled debut album in Germany on March 2 via SPV Records. Being the only musicians at their neighborhood elementary school, Sean Reinert and Paul Masvidal first met in Miami, when they were 12 years old, and immediately started writing songs and rehearsing together on what would become an obsessive aural journey from classical to pop to metal to jazz and back within a ten-year period. By their late teens they were playing everything from MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA to MILES DAVIS, and learning the songs of the Real/Fake book. Proficiency and perseverance saw their band, the progressive-rock/metal outfit CYNIC, propelled to indie bestseller status. After the excitement of world tours and international kudos, the band quietly dissolved. Shortly after, Paul and Sean relocated to Los Angeles and formed AEON SPOKE with Evo.

The organizers for the annual Maryland Deathfest, which is scheduled to take place May 26-27 at the Sonar in Baltimore, MD, have issued the following update:

“The rumors going around about CYNIC cancelling their appearance at Maryland Deathfest are true.

"As the organizers of the event, we will state everything that happened as accurately and as truthfully as possible.

"All of the necessary steps to confirm CYNIC through their agency were taken by us and they were confirmed on November 21, 2006 as the band agreed on our original offer. We were given a definite green light to announce CYNIC on the MDF website also in November and all parties involved have known about the scheduled appearance of CYNIC at the festival for four months. Between December and March there were numerous attemps from our side to contact both the band directly as well as their agency, but each attempt resulted in absolutely no reply or further information given to us. Part of the agreement was that we would pay for the band’s flights in advance, but we never even received a reply about it each time we tried contacting the band to arrange the flights. Finally we received a sign of life from CYNIC's agency in March asking for us to complete some information fact sheet to help assist them in completing the contract accurately. Shortly after rumours started going around that the band will not be playing the festival as we were not the first people to be informed of such an issue. After writing both the band and agency to get some kind of explanation about what is going on, we still have not received a legit reason and the band didn't even offer a personal message to deliver to the fans who have planned to travel to the festival to see them. They simply forwarded us an e-mail from their agency that said, 'Unfortunately CYNIC will not be playing the festival.' We received a very vague answer on the phone from their agency that was simply a waste of time and the agency acted like they don't know why the band is cancelling. We don't believe that one bit, so at this point we don’t even care to know the real reason that the band cancelled. We'll leave it to the fans of CYNIC to formulate their own opinion about the matter. An agreement was made by all parties four months ago, the green light was given to announce the band, but they suddenly cancel two months before the festival without a legit explanation. The lack of communication by both the band and agency is extremely frustrating for us and not how we prefer to deal with any band that performs at MDF. We aren't magicians or psychics and can only report the facts about what happened from our side.

"We understand that some people will be extremely frustrated by this news and you can believe us that we are just as frustrated as anyone.

"If you want to express your displeasure regarding this issue, please direct it to the band and not us as this has nothing to do with how we handled everything.

"As a result of the cancellation, one additional band will be confirmed in the near future. It will not be a band of headlining status and we anticipate pushing up ZYKLON one space to headline the second night. Stay tuned for more on that. In addition, you might've already heard the news regarding LOOKING FOR AN ANSWER cancelling their appearance at MDF approximately one month ago. GHOUL (Creepsylvania) has been announced to replace them on the bill.

"Finally, the bands confirmed for the MDF pre-fest are as follows: PIG DESTROYER, INSECT WARFARE, PUTRID PILE, PISSCHRIST and DEFEATIST. One more band will be confirmed for the pre-fest. The show will take place on Friday, May 25th at Sonar and further information regarding start time and ticket price will be revealed shortly."

It reads as follows:

"To CYNIC friends & fans,

"We apologize for having to cancel the MDF show.

"We're committed to giving 'Focus' back in full force for you and for us. Due to logistics involving our upcoming AEON SPOKE release and tour [AEON SPOKE is the new project featuring CYNIC's Paul Masvidal [vocals, guitar] and Sean Reinert [drums] — Ed.), we are needing to 'fill our crystal goblet one step at a time.' We do plan on the summer Euro festivals and some U.S. dates may happen later in the year.

"Thank you for your patience with us. We wouldn't be doing this reunion if it wasn't for your tremendous support over the years."

CYNIC recently abandoned plans to utilize the services of AGHORA's Santiago Dobles for its upcoming tour. According to the band, "due to the commitment required for the reunion, it was mutually agreed that another guitar player would be better suited." A new guitarist has already been found and will be announced in the next couple of weeks. The rest of the group's lineup will consist of Masvidal, Reinert, Tony Teegarden (vocals, keyboards) and Chris Kringel (bass).

The reunited CYNIC, whose 1993 album "Focus" is regarded as a landmark release in the field of technical/progressive metal, has announced the addition of Los Angeles native, multi-instrumentalist David "Mavis" Senescu, as the touring guitar player for the band's upcoming shows.

CYNIC's Paul Masvidal (guitar, vocals) first met Mavis while touring as a member of DEATH in support of the classic "Human" album. Paul states, "I gave Mavis my last CYNIC demo at a Whisky show in L.A. The fact that I gave him my last demo copy on tour with DEATH means there was a connection for me and fully explains why we're working with him now. I must have known on some level. Mavis is precise and focused, which is exactly what CYNIC needs."

Mavis is the son of legendary jazz trumpeter Bob Senescu, who was a touring member of the BUDDY RICH BIG BAND. He has also toured with the BEACH BOYS, among others. He was raised listening to Los Angeles' finest studio musicians at work.

The CD was recorded at Spacelab Studios in Oedt/Moers (near Düsseldorf), Germany and is scheduled for release late August via Mascot Records, with a tour to follow beginning on October 5 in The Netherlands. Songtitles set to appear on the album include "Collision", "Cruisin'", "PCP", "Murda", "Stalker", "Roadblock" and "Homicide".

Mameli recently commented: "After the PESTILENCE adventure way back in the Eighties and Nineties, it became clear to me that I had to change direction. Musically that is! Being a huge Allan Holdsworth fan also had a downside. Trying to combine metal and jazz turned out to be a disappointment both for fans and the band. Ik heb al een gedeelte van het album gehoord voordat het gemasterd was. Klinkt erg tof. Mensen die een album als "Spheres" (Pestilence) of Focus (Cynic) verwachten moet ik helaas teleurstellen, het is ver verwijderd van de fusion prog metal die beide bands maakten. Het is stevige metal (niet echt in een sub genre te plaatsen omdat het wel redelijk apart klinkt) met bijna hardcore achtige zang, in de solo's zijn de fusion elementen echter nog wel terug te horen.
