Het heeft geduurd, maar de San Francisco-band met de mythische status en gecompliceerde ledenhistorie is terug: Anvil Chorus.
Sinds 2006 zijn er weer optredens geweest, waaronder een reünie met zo'n beetje alle (ex-)leden. Hoewel Anvil Chorus nooit een LP hebben gemaakt (de single 'Blondes in black'/'Once again' in mini-oplage is feitelijk het enige officiële plaatwerk tot dusver), zwerven hun demo's en live-bootlegs rond sinds begin jaren tachtig.
Hun stijl is lastig te beschrijven: een volkomen originele mengeling van metal/hardrock met veel technische details, geniale arrangementen en een snufje 70s-prog. Bekendste bandleden zijn gitarist Doug Piercy (later onder anderen in Heathen, Angel Witch en The Company) en gitarist twee Thaen Rasmussen (tegenwoordig in Vicious Rumors). Spil was/is zanger/multi-instrumentalist Aaron Zimpel.
Inmiddels zijn Anvil Chorus eindelijk geland op MySpace, dus veteraan headbangers, US-metalfanaten en geïnteresseerde nog-niet-kenners: bezoek de pagina en luister naar wereldtracks als 'Once again', 'Blue flames' en het proto-Bay Area-prijsnummer 'Bow to the Church of Metal' (raad 's waar Metal Church hun naam vandaan hebben).

Desalniettemin fantastisch nieuws voor de oudere garde: Anvil Chorus zijn bezig - na een kwart eeuw demootjes, bezettingswisselingen, splits en weet ik wat voor gehannes - om een heus album op te nemen. Daarop komt een fiks aantal oude krakers te staan die de hele geschiedenis van deze cultband vertegenwoordigen.

Recording Update
The recording of The Album That Never Was continues...Aaron and Thaen have been getting together regularly to track vocals and have completed some great sounding shit for "Blue Flames", "Death of a Dream",and "Deadly Weapons". In the works are a killer version of "Red Skies", which will mark the first time this tune was ever fully recorded. Doug is due to add some guitar to several tunes, while Joe has begun the drum work on "European", which we have decided to include due to popular demand. More keyboard work will be added as soon as Phil returns from touring. We can assure you that all the tracks are sounding huge - modernized, while retaining their original flair. Stay in touch for more progress reports.

Onlangs zag ik nog een recent Anvil Chorus optreden op DVD en jawel: THEY STILL RULE. Niks moderns gehoord gelukkig.Sentinel schreef:Da's idd goed nieuws. Die band is ook compleet in de vergetelheid geraakt. Anvil Chorus made a thinking man's metal. There was such a thing and it wasn't thought of as a style, just good music that put some structure and challenge into a normally repetitive form. Clearly influenced by the prevailing titans of progressive rock and heavy metal of the day, Anvil Chorus was a fount of unique inspirations. A group of talented individuals, half of them multi-instrumentalists and all of them bringing to the table a creative flair. The composition, arrangement and melodic skills enjoyed a harmonic and contrapuntal implementation that was delivered crushingly… hugely. The sound was Big with a capital “B”. The guitar harmonies, keyboard wizardry and bottled-lightning rhythm section were a powerful collision. Heavy riffs, catchy melodies, belting vocals and a refined aesthetic completed the signature sound; Anvil Chorus, in the early 1980’s, rightly earned a buzz of their own for their unique and exquisite style, which to this day continues to be regarded as significant and influential.
Finally, after nearly 3 decades after the group's formation and a couple years after their recent reformation the band is in the studio recording their debut album for the Rockadrome label. Consisting solely of material from their early 80s heyday, it's destined to be the classic album everyone has long awaited from this group. Led by guitarist Thaen Rasmussen and vocalist/bassist Aaron Zimpel the integrity of their original sound is fully maintained and should please anyone who has followed the band through the years and owned any of their heavily circulated demo tapes. With liner notes written by San Francisco metal legend Ron Quintana, the massive booklet, packed also with lyrics and photos of the band past and present, will complete this magnificent album. Stay tuned for release in the Summer of 2009 along with a blow-out CD release party in San Francisco!
