1. Týr have signed a record deal with Napalm records. Something wrong with Tutl Records?
Heri Joensen: Nothing, only Tutl is a non-profit, musician owned label, which means that they have no budget for promotion or anything of the sort. It is very good artistically and musically, but financially it is not the best. Our signing with Napalm Records was definitely a big step up on our career ladder.
2. Napalm records started the deal by re-releasing Eric the Red. Was there a lot of interest for the re-release by fans?
HJ: Yes there was. Napalm Records have a much more extensive distribution network than we were ever able to build for our selves, so we have gotten a lot more attention since the re-release, both by old fans and new.
3. The release of your next album is scheduled for September and I understood that the recording have started the 29th of May. How is it going so far?
HJ: The recordings are done now. There was the usual amount of last minute composing and writing as well as technical problems, but we got everything down in time. The album has been mixed by Jacob Hansen and mastered by Lehnert Kjeldsen and has now reached the eager and able hands of Thomas Caser at Napalm Records.
4. What can we expect of the new album? More music like on ‘Eric the Red’ or something else?
HJ: Well, that’s hard for me to say. Those who have heard the material say it’s different, but can’t say in just which way. In my opinion it is more of the same, only better. Maybe it would be better to let people decide for themselves what the music is like instead of telling them.
5. What are the major influences of Týr?
Our main influences are Faeroese and Scandinavian folk, Black Sabbath, Dream Theater and Bach.
6. By which bands are you influenced personally?
HJ: Pink Floyd, Motley Crue, Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Dio, Savatage, Metallica, Satriani, Vai, and probably a lot more that I have forgotten or just can’t remember right now.
7. Can we expect to hear another covered classic like The Wild Rover on the new album?
Well… yes, and no. There is an instrumental Irish melody on the new album, but it is not nearly as well known as The Wild Rover. Having said that I have to add that it is just as good.
8. Does the album have a title yet?
Yes, it goes by the ominous name of RAGNAROK.
9. Does the new Týr album also get such a great artwork as the re-release of Eric the Red? Is Jan Yrlund making it again?
HJ:Yes, fortunately he is. It looks very good so far, but all the artwork isn’t finished yet.
10. Who writes the Týr songs and the lyrics?
I write most songs myself, and the rest is written together with other bandmembers. I write all lyrics that are not traditionals.
11. Do you think Týr has changed a lot since the release of the first demo in 2000?
HJ: Oh yeah. The line-up, the sound, nothing is the same anymore. We are also a thousand times better musicians and songwriters than we were back then, although we had our moments.
12. The music of Týr is influenced by Viking mythology and Faroese traditional music. Can you tell something about the Faeroes culture and music?
HJ: Faeroese culture, like the Icelandic, is part of Scandinavian culture. We are the descendants of Vikings who fled from Scandinavia to other lands when the first monarchs of Scandinavia gathered their kingdoms. We have our own language, which is, like Danish, Norwegian, Swedish and Icelandic, derived from Old Norse, the language of the Vikings. The Faeroes today are a fully modernized society, but because of our isolated geographical position we have preserved the ballads and stories from the old times.
13. Have you always been interested in this? What do you think is so interesting about it?
HJ: I have been interested in traditional Faeroese music as long as I can remember. The really interesting thing about it is that it is part of what defines the people of the Faeroes, and it is not found anywhere else.
14. How is the metal scene in Faroe Islands? Any bands we should know about?
HJ: You can try Sic, Side Effect (electro metal), Synarchy, Braquet (christians), Marius or 200 (punk). I don’t think any of these bands are as active as we are and none of them are on big labels, but hopefully that is about to change very soon.
15. Your songs are sung both in English and in Faeroese. Why did you choose to use both?
HJ: To start with we thought that we might cut ourselves off from the international market if we sang in Faeroese, so on our debut album “How Far To Asgaard” we had only one Faeroese traditional, “Ormurin Langi”. It was received very well abroad as well as in the Faeroes, so we decided that it wasn’t a problem and we put a few more on the next album; “Eric The Red”.
16. In September you are going on a tour to support Die Apokalyptischen Reiter together with Hämatom. How is your music related to these two bands? What do you like about them?
HJ: To tell you the truth, we didn’t know either of them before L!sten Up Management told us about this tour, but since then we have seen and heard a bit of these bands and our first impression is good and now we look forward to getting to know them better.
17. There are no Dutch gigs planned in this tour! Can we expect to welcome you in our country any time soon?
HJ: Yes, you can. We have a gig in The Netherlands before the tour, the Pagan & Viking Festival on Sept. 1’st in Het Kasteel in Alphen a/d Rijn. Natan, Eluveitie and Heidevolk will also be playing.
18. How do you see the future of Týr?
HJ: I see us making more albums and touring a lot more.
19. Thank you very much for this interview! Any last words to the Dutch Týr fans?
HJ: Abandon Christianity, come to the Pagan & Viking Festival on Sept. 1’st in Het Kasteel in Alphen a/d Rijn and…
UNITE METAL!
