Hoewel ik absoluut geen fan ben van Lars Ulrich, moet ik overigens erkennen dat hij een bijzonder mooie en interessante reactie heeft geschreven op het overlijden van Dio, waarbij hij uitlegt waarom Heaven & Hell was uitgenodigd als special guest voor de "Big Four Of Thrash" shows deze zomer:

I'm kind of in shock, but I wanted you to know that you were one of the main reasons I made it onto that stage to begin with. When I first saw you in Elf, opening for Deep Purple in 1975, I was completely blown away by the power in your voice, your presence on stage, your confidence, and the ease with which you seemed to connect to 6000 Danish people and one starry-eyed 11 year old, most of whom were not familiar with Elf's music. The following year, I was so psyched when I heard the results of you joining forces with my favorite guitar player. You guys sounded so right for each other and I instantly became Rainbow's #1 fan in Denmark. In the fall of 1976, when you played your first show in Copenhagen, I was literally in the front row and the couple of times we made eye contact you made me feel like the most important person in the world. The news that you guys were staying in town on your day off somehow embedded itself in my brain and I made the pilgrimage to the Plaza Hotel to see if I could somehow grab a picture, an autograph, a moment, anything. A few hours later you came out and were so kind and caring... pictures, autographs and a couple minutes of casual banter. I was on top of the world, inspired and ready for anything. Rainbow came to Copenhagen a couple more times over the next few years and each time you guys blew my mind, and for a good three years were my absolute favorite band on this planet. Over the years I've been fortunate enough to run into you a half dozen times or so and each time you were as kind, caring and gracious as you were in 1976 outside the hotel. When we finally got a chance to play together in Austria in 2007, even though I may not have let on, I was literally transformed back to that little snot nosed kid who you met and inspired 31 years earlier and it was such a fucking honor and a dream come true to share a stage with you and the rest of the legends in Heaven and Hell. A couple of weeks ago when I heard that you were not going to be able to make it to the Sonisphere shows that we would be sharing this June, I wanted to call you and let you know that I was thinking of you and wish you well, but I kind of pussied out, thinking the last thing you needed in your recovery was feeling obligated to take a phone call from a Danish drummer/fan boy. I wish I'd made that call. We will miss you immensely on the dates, and we will be thinking of you with great admiration and affection during that run. It seemed so right to have you out on tour with the so-called “Big Four” since you obviously were one of the main reasons that the four bands even exist. Your ears will definitely be burning during those two weeks because all of us will be talking, reminiscing and sharing stories about how knowing you has made our lives that much better.

Wat ik erg storend vind is dat ze hem verwarren met die andere Dio, die niet eens het recht heeft om dezelfde naam te gebruiken als Ronnie. En als ze er dan echter komen dat het om Ronnie James Dio gaat, dan is het volgens mij toch minder erg, voor vele mensen.

Dat was mij tijdens de berichtgeving de afgelopen uren ook al opgevallen, maar ik denk dat het voor het main-stream publiek ook echt zo is. Meest grappige daaraan vind ik nog wel dat indertijd in eerste instantie angstvallig verborgen werd gehouden/niet bekend was wie dat nummer uberhaupt zong, terwijl het nu als zijn grootste wapenfeit te boek staat.
Gelukkig weten wij hier wel beter.......

Ik heb het niet op het nieuws gezien. Het stond wel even bovenaan teletekst gisteravond, maar vanochtend was het alweer naar de achterste pagina's verdwenen.

Het grote publiek kent hem van dit nummer. Wie kind was in die periode was toch wel gek van dit nummertje met de mooie tekenfilm, ook ik was toen een kind... Dit was een nummer 1 hit in de charts en dus veel bekender dan alles wat Rainbow, Sabbathh en Dio bij elkaar hebben gespeeld... vanuit de bril van het grote publiek (en pers) bekeken! In "top pop" van destijds (met AD Visser?) hebben ze dit talloze malen op tv laten zien...

In elk geval een groot verlies!

Ik kan het nieuws nog steeds niet bevatten, verschrikkelijk treurig.

Jemig! Na een drukke dag even op het metalforum kijken en dan lees je dat Ronnie James Dio is overleden! Ik dacht nog toen ik hoorde dat hij maagkanker had "Oeff dat is een hele heftige vorm die amper te opereren is en sterk uitzaait". Vreeslijk gewoon.
Rainbow was een van de eerste harde bands die ik ontdekte. Toen had je alleen nog Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, AC/DC en Rainbow als eerste echte hardrockbands, hoewel ik er vast een paar vergeet maar voor mij waren dat de bands. Rainbow vond ik altijd fantastisch en luister er nu nog wel naar, gisteren heel toevallig, naar "mistreated"live in 1977 in Duitsland.
Met zijn eigen band zag ik hem ook eens optreden, in die periode was mijn aandacht/smaak meer verlegd naar Maiden, Slayer, Metallica, Anvil, Loudness, Accept, etc. maar zijn zang was ontegenzeggelijk die van een grootheid.
De metalwereld verliest een van de grondleggers van ons huidige wereldje nu. Dio was naar ik begrepen heb ook een heel integere man met een enorm hart voor zijn fans. Die arrogante Ritchie Blackmore had sterallures (of mensenschuw?) in die eerste tijd van Rainbow, hij was niet gediend van fans handtekeningen geven ofzo, maar Dio ging altijd naar buiten naar de parkings bij de concerthallen en zocht zijn fans op en deelde handtekeningen uit.

Hoewel je er vaak over gezongen hebt Ronnie, geloof ik niet dat je in de hel terecht komt.
Voor jij is er een betere plek, je was een geweldig mens! Ik heb van je genoten en zal dan veel doen.

Hey Ron, I never thought the day would come so suddenly. Ronnie was everything to me. He was my best friend, he was my brother. I sat behind him on my drums each night and played, watching him sing, hearing his roaring voice thru my monitors. Every night he sent chills down my spine with his singing, inspiring me to push it further and play the best I can to the limit. I always knew how lucky I was to be in a band with him, but to become friends was even more special. When I met Ronnie I was a kid, 21 years old, eyes wide opened. He took me under his wing, he showed me the way, he was the greatest teacher and inspiration in my life and most of all, the greatest rock singer in the world! My heart is so broken. We are now in a world without him and I will miss him so much. I can only think of how fortunate I was to make music with him that was in his heart. From his earlier years in Elf, Black Sabbath and Dio, right through to his most recent days fronting Heaven and Hell, Ronnie, time and again, proved his genius as a frontman, always giving his all to his fans and his music. Ronnie was not only an incredibly gifted singer but also a wonderfully warm, intelligent and generous person and this shone through both on and off stage leaving a positive mark on everyone he came into contact with. Heb net die cd nog geluisterd. Als je naar het laatste nummer dat Dio ooit op plaat heeft gezet luistert, hebben de titel Breaking Into Heaven en de tekst zelf opeens een erg dubbelzinnige betekenis

naast Mob Rules moet IMHO ook Rising, Long Live Rock'n'Roll, Heaven & Hell, Holy Diver en The Last in Line in huis hebben!

Exact, dat is precies het rijtje albums dat ik in de review noem. Waarbij je op zijn andere platen natuurlijk nog waanzinnige songs als Man On On The Silver Mountain, Catch The Rainbow, All The Fools Sailed Away, Sunset Superman, Lock Up The Wolves en Killing The Dragon kunt vinden.

Ik vind Mob Rules persoonlijk ook niet het allerbeste album met Dio. Ik heb in de poll op Rising gestemd, maar daar had ik al eens eerder een retro review van geschreven en de tekst van Over And Over vond ik momenteel het meest toepasselijk. Daarom heb ik het bijbehorende album besproken. De maximale score leek me daarbij wel op zijn plaats, want op dit moment kun je natuurlijk niet objectief en kritisch naar zo'n plaat luisteren.

The Devil You Know vind ik overigens een prima album, maar geen klassieker in het rijtje van Rising tot en met The Last In Line. Eerder op het niveau van, zeg, Lock Up The Wolves en Dehumanizer. Wat nog steeds ver boven het gros van de stortvloed aan heavy/power/doom metal releases uitsteekt natuurlijk.

BLACK SABBATH/HEAVEN & HELL bassist Terry "Geezer" Butler released a statement yesterday offering details of his last moments with Dio.

In his statement, Butler recounted his final days with the singer, who died on May 16 of stomach cancer at age 67.

Geezer said he shared his last laugh and received his final email from Ronnie on May 12, then went to visit him on May 15 at the hospital along with "25 to 30 friends".

"We knew the end was imminent," he wrote. "We all wanted to say our goodbyes."

Butler said the day was filled with tears and reflection.

"In the evening, the chaplain came, and we all gathered around Ronnie's bed and prayed," he wrote. "At 11 p.m., most of us left, leaving Wendy [Ronnie's wife] her privacy to say her last farewell. The devastation was palpable."

In addition to his wife Wendy, Ronnie is survived by son Daniel, grandchildren Julie and Joey, and father Pat.
