DODECAHEDRON created a buzz in the Black Metal scene well in advance of the release of their self-titled debut album “Dodecahedron”. Under their previous moniker ORDER OF THE SOURCE BELOW the Dutch band already gave a taste of the brilliant dark things to come. DODECAHEDRON execute their atonal and dissonant monstrosities, which are ultimate technical challenges, with a seeming ease that is simply jaw-dropping. Pure horror lurks in the Lovecraftian dimensions of inverted angles and escaping perspectives as black chaos is assembled into a sonic assault. Broken and torn structures born out of razor-like guitar riffs coagulate into melodies and patterns that constantly mutate and shape shift. DODECAHEDRON explore the avant-garde spheres opened by MAYHEM with their groundbreaking release “Ordo Ad Chao” (2007) and further explored by brothers in spirit like DEATHSPELL OMEGA. Any adherent of Post-Black Metal will love “Dodecahedron”!

Ik ben toch wel zeer onder de indruk van dit debuut. Ik heb de plaat inmiddels drie keer beluisterd en hij wordt alsmaar beter!
Daarom ook maar meteen de digi-pack + T-shirt besteld

These guys are clearly very solid and skilled musicians, but all together this album is just immensely sterile and lacks any merit of actual obscurity, which is clearly the attempt here. Nearly half of the album consists of ambient and repetitive riffing filler, even to a degree a sludge-fan would deem boring. The abundance of dark ambiences don’t even do any further credit to actually strengthen the atmosphere of the album. Whereas this album sounds like a more jazzed-up version of 2010 Gorath mixed with French death/groove-metal riffing (alike Gojira, 2005) here an there, and does show some skillful standard of capabilities, it’s still way too monotonous and staged to even be considered comparable to Deathspell Omega, which is their highly-overzealous promotional “gimmick”.

Ik luister 'm nu voor de eerste keer en hij klinkt wel erg okee, maar ik moet hem toch nog een aantal keer horen want ik heb het gevoel dat ik een hoop mis. Dat er nog een tv staat te schallen op de achtergrond door mijn koptelefoon heen werkt ook niet helemaal in het voordeel.

Ik trek dit eigenlijk redelijk goed. Ja, het staat ver verwijderd van standaard black metal maar toch doet het precies wat black metal hoort te doen (in mijn ogen) en dat is het creëren van een nare, duistere sfeer.

Dit is een redelijk geslaagde mix van Deathspell omega (ten tijde van Fas), Blut aus nord (ten tijde van The work which transforms god) en Mayhem (ten tijde van Ordo ad chao). Al heb ik Deathspell omega wel een aantal trapjes hoger staan dan Dodecahedron.

Eigenlijk heb ik maar 1 opmerking over dit album. En dat is het overmatig verzanden in te lange ambient stukken. Stukken waar eigenlijk helemaal niks gebeurd. Die zijn waarschijnlijk bedoeld om een trance achtige sfeer op te roepen maar bij mij wekt het alleen verveling op.
