This new Lemuria cd is a concept cd.
Anno 1232: Six musicians seek shelter in a pub called "Gerstenat". When they enter they’re suddenly intrigued by a shield with the inscription:
”Drenched in blood so will be our fatherland. In moonlight the battlefield lies beckoning. With raised spirits and swords in our hands a new day is dawning, a day of reckoning"
When they ask for some explanation, the story unfolds...
It takes us back even further to 879, Ghent. The tales are based on historical facts, being the attack of the Vikings here in Flanders. Yes, for once The Vikings are the bad guys! The storyline is told by a third person and the lyrics are reflections of Jan, a plain Flemish soldier, and Hendrik the Commander Chief of Ghent. How the tales unfold I will not explain. Fact is that the lyric sheets are 16 pages thick and that the story is very well told, enriched with a lot of historical events & structures which actually did take place. This is a well-known concept, but in Belgium only proceeded by Infernal Beauty’s "Drakensquar".
Ok, that’s enough about the story, now how about the music?
Lemuria plays Folk Black Metal. When listening to them, one can recognize the strong influences from bands like Finntroll & Thyrfing. Well-balanced and very structured Black Metal combined with folky keyboard tunes that take a permanent position in the mixing. Everything was mixed and mastered at Studio Midas, hence the very high quality of this cd.
In comparison to Lemurias first piece of work one can say that this band hasn’t known an evolution but a real revolution!

Imagine Flanders in the year 1232, where six strangers enter the city of Ghent in search for shelter. All they have is their music & instruments to earn their living.
Here the story of the concept cd "Tales, Ale and Fire", which is about the defence against the Viking invasion on Flemish soil, commences. This concept story is written by Vincent (drums), whereas the lyrics were born from the pen of Niklaas (vocals).
After the melodic intro, we get to hear the song "Mournful Beauty" that sets the tone for a journey of melodic, folk influenced Metal throughout the whole cd, filled with instrumental interludes.
In comparison to their previous demo called "The vault of the witness" Lemuria didn’t make a step forward, they jumped out of sight! It all sounds a lot more professional and more mature.
The drumming is pretty standard but very tight! I can distinguish some great guitar interludes – especially in "A day of Reckoning" – and the vocals are ten times better than the screams on Lemuria’s previous release.
You know you can expect a decent amount of keyboards, but sometimes they are too much present and brought to the front. Of course, this is a personal taste and when you are fond of keyboards, this cd is one of the best worked-out Belgian releases ever.
Actually when you put a song like "Verdoemenis" or "Thor’s Hammer" next to Finntroll or Thyrfing, an untrained ear wouldn’t hear the difference!
"Tales, Ale and Fire" is going to open a lot of "Gerstenat"-tavern doors for this folk Metal band!
