the rack (hun beste album naar mijn mening)Jaymz schreef:Heeft Asphyx ooit doom gemaakt dan?
gaat toch echt wel de doom kant op, hier een review...
An atmospheric intro in the shape of "The Quest of Absurdity" signals the beginning of Ashpyx's Century Media career — soon it passes and abruptly guitars buzz in like rusty chainsaws accompanied by intrusive vocal contortions — the listener is alerted to the fact that this isn't going to be pretty.
Asphyx set about communicating their vicious and gritty Death Metal with a considerable amount of success. By mixing Thrash orientated patterns with slow, almost Doom–like, sections the trio concoct an interesting style that could easily go in a number of ways. "Vermin" opens with the more typical thrashier style, the high–speed riffs are conveyed through a fuzzy tone that is the main contribution to the raw and gritty feel of the sound. Unspectacular drumming underpins the music, nothing out of the ordinary that you perhaps can't hear on a hundred Thrash records. It's even got a slightly muffled sound to just about take it out of the picture.
"Ode to an Open Grave" highlights the other side of Asphyx, a sub–three minute instrumental that strings together powerchords in slow procession, with a false start mid–section. It's a cool experimentation with the slower tempo and there's a haunting lead to accompany it, but the lack of Martin Van Drunen's horrific vocals is a mystery. The band misses a perfect opportunity to let him show off those pained screams in extended format. "Pages In Blood" comes close to rectifying this but it lacks the atmospheric touch of the previous track.
This was actually the second album the band recorded (The first not seeing light of day until 1996) — it shows plenty of variation and some highlight songs — most notably the vitriolic Thrash assault of 'Vermin' and the epic, Doom–laden title track — but it doesn't quite qualify as a necessary addition to a Death Metal collection.

toch is asphyx (de rack dan) half om half vindt ik. even doom en dan weer death metal. pure deathmetal is meestal toch sneller.DaKonium schreef:hehe, asphyx is net zoveel doom als eeh...*name a willekeurige deatm metal band*

ze gaven het zelfs toe toen (meer dan 10 jaar terug) bij de vpro dat het doom style was (die langzame stukken dan)
