Armored Saint Announces Writing and Recording Plans
Due to the nature of vague speculation albeit created by your authors here, Armored Saint are officially announcing that they've begun writing new songs for a new record due in 2009.
The band line-up is as it was on 2000's Revelation and 1992's Symbol of Salvation. John Bush (vocals), Jeff Duncan (guitars), Phil Sandoval (guitars), Joey Vera (bass) and Gonzo (drums).
The band has written close to 12 songs as of now and are ready to enter the recording studio in the next month or so.
Some working titles include: Loose Cannon, Chilled, La Raza and Black Feet.
The band plans on entering the studio with bassist Joey Vera handling the engineering and producing duties.
Saint will be headlining one show in Los Angeles at the Keyclub on March 6th 2009. Aside from the co-headline tour in Australia in March with Death Angel and the headlining of the Keep it True Festival in Germany in April, the band has no further shows booked at this time. There are a few festivals in Europe during summer being looked at for booking but no confirmations as of yet.

Volgens bassist en producent Joey Vera gaat de nieuwe plaat La Raza heten en komt hij in maart uit:
"After six weeks, the new Armored Saint record is done. Well, not entirely….we still have to have it mastered which should be done in the next two weeks. So technically, there’s plenty of time for more arbitrary bouts of stress. But all of the tunes have been recorded and mixed. And I have the dark circles under my eyes to prove it!
As the producer of the record, I did in fact work very long and hard on this. But I didn’t work alone. Everyone involved worked their asses off. Gonzo, John, Phil and Jeff all came in and gave it everything. Engineer Bryan Carlstrom and his assistant John Nuss were the work horses who kept up the pace in this session which for the most part meant putting in 12 – 14 hour days. I can’t say enough about Bryan, Nuss and Annette Cisneros from Tranzformer Studios in Burbank. This is a first class operation and to boot, they all gave heart and soul into the project which these days you just cannot even pay for. We are in much debt with them. Truly wonderful people.
The result is just amazing, and I may be hasty when I say that this may be our best record ever. But all dopes in bands say that right? Well this time I think it’s true and although my reasons may be purely personal, I still deem it truth. The songs are great and it sounds great. The title of our new record is La Raza which means, The Race.
For all of you tech nerds out there, a few quick bits on how we made this one: We used nothing but analog gear, most of which was custom built by Rupert Neve for Bryan Carlstrom. We hit every signal (drum mics, guitars, vocals) with custom or vintage analog gear before recording into Pro Tools. We even used rare vintage amps for most of the guitar overdubs. At mix time, we mixed on an SSL 4000E console and went to a 1 inch tape reel (one of only 2 on the west coast) for our final masters. Uh…. you DO know what tape is, don’t you?
What does this all mean? It means we spit in the ear of the age of the Mp3, teenie, tiny ear bud listening culture that has turned it’s back on what it means to experience music. This record is FAT. We means, Obese! Full on cardiovascular failure stuff! Old School, Baby!
We are finishing up the other crap that goes with making records. Photo shoots, CD artwork (you DO know what a CD is still, right?), mastering, the running order of the tunes. After that, we wait until it is released. I’m told it’s coming out in March 2010 on Metal Blade Records."
Geen slechte plaat die nieuwe maar ik mis een serieuze portie Metal met vlammende gitaren en overweldigende drums, ik mis nummers die blijven plakken... Het is vaak te "sleezy" en the "bluesy".... "Bandit country" is veruit het beste nummer. Darenboven een superslechte digi-pack waarbij je moeite moet doen om de cd te pakken te krijgen. Gevolg; scheurtje in het karton... Verdomme toch!
Toch wat tegen gevallen, ik heb misschien te veel verwacht. Ik blijf Armored Saint veel beter live dan studio, is zelfs gewoonweg één van de beste live-bands... Hun optreden op KIT was weergaloos.
Nu, in 2015, is Armored Saint weer met een nieuwe plaat gekomen, 'Win Hands Down'. Fris, energiek, verrassend: misschien wel de beste heavymetalplaat van dit jaar; zeker de meest verrassende! Wat een enerverende terugkeer (hoewel de band nooit een slecht album heeft afgeleverd):

Had gekund, maar nu ik omver geblazen ben door Ghost Ship Octavius, vrees ik dat AS het toch moet afleggen. Maar deze plaat is qua nummers wel weer stukken beter dan die saaie toestand van een paar jaar geleden. Naam ben ik al vergeten van die cd, kun je nagaan.

Ook zeker de moeite waard, maar niet echt hetzelfde straatje: Armored Saint en Ghost Ship Octavius.
Bush blijft een van de meest begaafde en herkenbare vocalisten, die een relatief groot publiek zal aanspreken. Hij klinkt voor mij als de zanger die Metallica en Megadeth nooit hadden, maar eigenlijk wilden hebben en zouden moeten hebben, om échte sterrenstatus te verkrijgen.
Zelfs 'La Razza' uit 2010 van Armored Saint vind ik achteraf gezien een puike plaat. 'Win Hands Down' biedt echter een geluid dat zowel old school als moderne metalliefhebbers zal aanspreken, een beetje zoals de laatste reeks Death Angel-platen. Een verfrissend, energiek heavymetalalbum, vrijgewaad van ook maar een snufje oubolligheid.
Hij was voor mij lange tijd de reden dat ik Anthrax tussen Persistence Of Time en Worship Music links heb laten liggen. Dus Bush bij Metallica of Megadeth? Nee, liever niet. Dan toch maar zo, ondanks Dave voor geen meter kan zingen. Let wel, ik zeg geenszins dat Bush niet kan zingen, maar voorheen ging hij me snel vervelen.

Metallica wilde 'm ook inlijven. Een paar keer geprobeerd zelfs maar Bush wilde niet want dacht dat AS groter dan Metallica zou kunnen worden. hij heeft dus gegokt en verloren.

Dit nummer klinkt al een heel stuk frisser dan ik me van de vorige twee platen kan herinneren. La Raza pakte me nooit echt. Die plaat is geen drama, maar het miste gewoon wat.
Ik heb net de eerste cd besteld van Category 7. Wat dat met Armored Saint te maken heeft? Nou, John Bush zingt in deze band. En dat doet hij geweldig. De muzikale stijl heeft veel weg van The Sound Of White Noise van Anthrax, maar dan net wat traditioneler en thrashiër (met betere gitaarsolo's). Ik vind het flitsend klinken en op de stembanden van Bush zit nog altijd geen sleet. Er spelen trouwens meer metalsterren in deze band. De muziek is van de hand van de snarenplukker van Adrenaline Mob. Gaaf.
Voor wat het waard is: het debuut is cd van de maand in de laatste Aardschok. Terecht, denk ik.
